Why standard grease isn't enough — and what a proper lubrication program looks like for rack, pinion and offshore drive components.
Jack-up rig jacking systems operate under extreme mechanical load and relentless marine exposure. For rack and pinion drives, gearboxes, and leg components, lubrication is not a routine maintenance item — it is a critical reliability requirement.
The jacking system carries the entire weight of the rig during elevation, holding, and lowering operations. Gear teeth and pinions experience conditions that push ordinary lubricants to their limits.
Inadequate lubrication in these conditions leads to accelerated wear, pitting, corrosion, increased friction, overheating and ultimately costly jacking system repairs — often at the worst possible time operationally.
Most jack-up rigs use rack and pinion systems where the pinions engage with the leg rack to move the rig vertically. These open-gear contact conditions demand lubricants with significantly higher film strength and adhesion than standard industrial grease.
In offshore conditions, ordinary grease typically cannot provide the adhesion, water resistance, or load-carrying performance that these exposed gear systems require.
Jack-up legs operate in one of the most aggressive lubrication environments in any industry. A suitable lubricant must remain in place, resist wash-off, and continue protecting exposed gear surfaces even when the rig is on standby.
Poor lubrication often develops gradually, becoming visible only during inspection or jacking operations. Common indicators include:
Selecting the right lubricant for jack-up leg gear systems requires evaluating several performance factors — not just viscosity or brand.
| Selection Factor | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Load-carrying capability | Prevents metal-to-metal contact under full jacking load |
| Extreme pressure (EP) performance | Protects tooth flanks during heavy-load engagement |
| Adhesion to gear surfaces | Ensures lubricant stays in place between operations |
| Water resistance | Prevents wash-off from seawater and spray |
| Corrosion protection | Protects exposed steel in marine atmosphere |
| Application method | Must be pumpable or suitable for the rig's lubrication system |
| Compatibility | Must be compatible with existing lubricant on the system |
| OEM requirements | Approval or recommendation from jacking system manufacturer |
Specialty gear lubricants and high-performance additives can significantly improve protection in high-load offshore gear applications, supporting boundary lubrication, film strength, wear reduction, shock-load protection and corrosion resistance.
For jack-up operators, these products should be evaluated as part of a jacking system reliability program — not as a generic grease purchase decision. The performance difference between a standard grease and a properly specified specialty gear lubricant can be substantial in terms of component life and maintenance costs.
A structured approach to jack-up leg gear lubrication reduces risk and improves jacking system reliability across the asset's operational life.
Project Sales Corporation supplies specialty lubricants, gear protection products, anti-seize compounds, valve lubricants, sealants and critical maintenance consumables for jack-up rigs, offshore platforms, drilling rigs and marine assets.
